Over the past few months we’ve had quite a few enquiries from people asking for any good books on the history of Walkerville. Well it just so happens that there is a fantastic book available titled ’Recollections of Waratah and the Ten Mile‘, by Mabel Sharrock. It’s not a very long book, only 30 pages or so but it gives a very comprehensive history of the place back when it was a thriving township.
During the book, Mabel Sharrock tells of her childhood days around Waratah Bay and the district of Ten Mile, writing of the country as she and her parents saw it about the time of the Great War. Much of it then was largely untouched with its native wildflowers, birds and animals and great paperbark swamps. She traces the history of the Waratah Bay settlement and its hinterland and describes the coastline of this pictureque bay lying between Cape Liptrap and Wilson’s Promontory.
