Dear Gerard.

Limeburners track closure.. Walkerville

It has come to attention that the above track that provides high tide access between the beaches at north and south walkerville and landmark access to the historic cemetery has been closed by parks since September last year

We are writing to seeking clarification of what your intentions are for the future of this very important access track and tourist trail which has been serving the local community for well in excess of 60 years.

You may not be aware that families walk from north Walkerville and the camping ground  to enjoy the only all tide swimming beach at south Walkerville. On their return they need to use all or parts of Limeburners track at high tide ,the only other alternatives being to wade through waist high surf at the kilns and the precarious bluff ,or walk 13 km in barefeet around the loop road.I am sure we would agree that the last two options aren’t very viable for families with young children.

We hope there is significant community input into your decision making process which is allready 5 months old, from those people who use the track [rather than those who don’t use it].This closure is seemingly been brought about because a medium size tree has fallen across the thus very popular track near the kilns, there have been many other trees  fall across the track of this nature over the last 60 years and the previous response was to simply remove them .

We are optimistic that common sense will prevail after all the issues and alternatives have been examined and Parks will continue to to maintain the track as they have since they took over its responsibility some years ago.Everyone is working in a vacuum at the moment and we would welcome your feedback on this issue.

We would also like to discuss at another time the possibility of making improvements to look out from the Loop Road over the prom to provide something like you have at the Prom.It would also be good to open up a couple of windows in the vegetation on the road that runs from the top of the hill down to the camping ground to allow tourists the majestic vistas available over the  Wilsons Promontoruy…..Walkerville and Waratah Bay…these lookouts used to be very popular in days of old but have become overgrown over the years ..personally I think the landscape views coming down the hill are as good if not better than anthing on the Great Ocean Road or the Prom….fabulous photo opportunities and great promotion for Victorian tourism and complementing Wilsons Promontory

We are available at any time to discuss these matters.

Yours faithfully

Steve Graham - President WPA
